The local electric utility system is consider taking out a loan to help pay the bills associated with last monthâs devastating winter storm.
GEUS announced Friday that the GEUS Board of Trustees will consider securing short-term financing.
âAt this time, the costs of this event are being absorbed by GEUS,â said GEUS Board of Trustees Chair Sue Ann Harting.
A public hearing to discuss the matter at the GEUS Operations Center, 6000 Joe Ramsey Blvd., in Greenville at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 11.
Vinton plans to borrow $4.3 million to complete water and sewer upgrades, resulting in modest rate hikes for its more than 5,000 utility customers in eastern Roanoke County.
Two large projects, one each for sewer and water, require $4 million to fund, with a third, smaller project also identified for completion in the near future, after the town council approves measures to borrow the money, said Vinton Town Manager Pete Peters.
For a bit more than $2 million, Vinton is converting its more than 4,500 residential and 525 commercial customers to remote-read water meters.
âThatâs not only the meter itself in the ground, but in some cases, meter boxes, the antennas â all the infrastructure that would actually collect that data, and then communicate it back to our office,â Peters said. âThen thereâs some software on the back end.â
High school students in Lamar County are learning life-long lessons through a program offered by the Texas Workforce Commission through the Lamar County Shared Services Arrangement.
Through the program, students are taught a state-based curriculum in preparing them for the workforce that include job skills, problem-solving skills, team building and money management. Local businesses then hire them for part-time positions giving them the extra responsibilities on top of their school load.
LCSSA serves North Lamar ISD (fiscal agent), Chisum ISD and Prairiland ISD, providing a full continuum of services for students with learning and/or physical disabilities.
The work program gives students a sense of independence and self-worth. Many secure jobs on their own while others are placed as a part of the schoolâs co-op program.
